Theexternalobliquemuscle(oftheabdomen)(alsoexternalabdominalobliquemuscle)isthelargestandthemostsuperficial(outermost)ofthethreeflatmusclesofthelateralanteriorabdomen.

Theexternalobliqueissituatedonthelateralandanteriorpartsoftheabdomen.Itisbroad,thin,andirregularlyquadrilateral,itsmuscularportionoccupyingtheside,itsaponeurosistheanteriorwalloftheabdomen.Inmosthumans(especiallyfemales),theobliqueisnotvisible,duetosubcutaneousfatdepositsandthesmallsizeofthemuscle.

Itarisesfromeightfleshydigitations,eachfromtheexternalsurfacesandinferiorbordersofthefifthtotwelfthribs.Thesedigitationsarearrangedinanobliquelinewhichrunsinferiorlyandanteriorly,withtheupperdigitationsbeingattachedclosetothecartilagesofthecorrespondingribs,thelowesttotheapexofthecartilageofthelastrib,theintermediateonestotheribsatsomedistancefromtheircartilages.

Thefivesuperiorserrationsincreaseinsizefromabovedownward,andarereceivedbetweencorrespondingprocessesoftheserratusanteriormuscle;thethreeloweronesdiminishinsizefromabovedownwardandreceivebetweenthemcorrespondingprocessesfromthelatissimusdorsi.Fromtheseattachmentsthefleshyfibersproceedinvariousdirections.
